PRESS RELEASE - Solufeed Blueberry Special the perfect speciality fertilizer choice for Blueberry production.
Demand for Blueberries is at an all time high as more UK
consumers include a variety of
soft fruit in their healthier daily diet. Most Blueberries are
still imported, but UK production is strongly on the increase, with
some estimates indicating that UK production increased by around
30% in the 2011 season.
Yet because of their unusual nutritional requirements
Blueberries present very special challenges to growers seeking to
ensure good returns on the high up front establishment costs of a
Dick Holden, Managing Director of fertiliser specialists
Solufeed explains: 'Blueberries present the grower with
multiple challenges. They are ericaceous, so Blueberries require an
acidic fertiliser regime, with a soil or substrate pH of between
4.5 and 5.5, but they are also rather fussy about nitrogen.
Blueberries lack adequate nitrate reductase activity to metabolise
NO3. Whilst both NH4 and NO3 forms
are taken up by the plant, the NO3 remains unused. This
usually does no harm, though there have been reports of leaf burn
where high levels of NO3 fertilizers have been used. A
consequence of course is that the NO3 in fertilizers is
effectively wasted. No-one can afford waste nowadays.'
In response to these issues Solufeed developed a 'Blueberry
formulation for irrigation water where the
bicarbonate is 150 ppm or higher. 'This not only addresses the pH
issue but the formulation contains only readily available
NH4 and ureic nitrogen as well as a range of
chelated micronutrients. So it provides an ideal, balanced and
targeted recipe for strong growth and high production with no waste
of nitrogen.' says Dick.
